Patterns and risk factors associated with index Lower Extremity Amputations (LEA) among Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) patients in Fiji

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is defined as a metabolic condition that results from decreased insulin secretion and function [1,2]. It is the most common type of diabetes, constituting more than 90% of all diabetic patients [3 –6]. T2DM currently affects 463 million adults worldwide [7]. The Western Pacific region has the highest diabetes burden in the world, and it is estimated that up to 1 in 3 adults in Pacific island populations have T2DM [8]. The estimated prevalence of T2DM in Fiji from the 2002 STEPS Survey was 1 6% [9], which is twice the global average [10] and it was estimated to be 19.3% by 2020 [11].
