The major endocannabinoid anandamide (AEA) induces apoptosis of human granulosa cells
Folliculogenesis is a cyclic, dynamic, and highly organised process, defined by the growth and development of follicles that culminates with the generation of a competent oocyte. Oocyte quality is crucial for reproductive success and greatly depends on the interaction with the surrounding granulosa cells (GCs). This dialogue is mediated by a large variety of molecular markers, such as hormones, cytokines and growth factors [1]. The GCs have also a pivotal role after ovulation in the formation of the corpus luteum, by providing the hormonal support for embryo implantation [2].
