Effects of sleep intervention on glucose control: A narrative review of clinical evidence
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the number of adults that contracted diabetes in 2014 was approximately two times that of 1980 (from 4.7% to 8.5%) [1]. Various lifestyle factors have been shown to influence an individual ’s risk of developing diabetes and disease progression. Among them, sleep deprivation is an emerging risk factor leading to insulin resistance as well as Type 2 diabetes (T2D) [2]. Several hours of sleep per night is recommended by the joint consensus statement of the American Academy of Sleep Med icine and Sleep Research Society for optimal health [3].
