Comment on: Routine preoperative resting echocardiography does not predict adverse cardiopulmonary events after bariatric surgery

The purpose of the pre-operative cardiac assessment for bariatric surgery can be viewed in to two ways. The first is in identification of patients who may have significant peri-operative cardiovascular risk for elective surgery where postponement for risk-reduction may be indicated, for example a patient with angina found to be a candidate for myocardial revascularization. The second purpose is to help guide peri-operative surgical management. Left ventricular function is most commonly evaluated pre-operatively by echocardiography.
