Prolonged Postoperative Mechanical Ventilation (PPMV) in Children Undergoing Abdominal Operations: An Analysis of the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS-NSQIP) Database

Most children undergoing general surgical procedures do not require postoperative mechanical ventilation.[1] For the subset of patients with postoperative mechanical ventilation, the postoperative mechanical ventilation duration is a critical determinant of postsurgical outcomes, resource utilization, and cost. In general, prolonged postoperative mechanical ventilation (PPMV) is associated with increased length of stay (LOS), hospitalization costs, morbidity, and mortality.[2-5]
