Interleukin-37 as a biomarker of mortality risk in patients with sepsis
Sepsis is defined as a life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by the host's unbalanced response to infection (1). This is a new consensus definition and derived from “The International Consensus on Sepsis and Septic Shock" (Sepsis-3) (2). Preliminary extrapolation of data from high-income countries shows an estimated 31.5 million cases of sepsis and 19.4 million cases of severe sepsis worldwide, which may cause 5.3 million deaths (3). Sepsis is still the leadi ng cause of death in critically ill patients worldwide.
