Late-season influenza: Don't let your guard down!

Influenza season traditionally lasts 3-4 months, starting in December, lasting through March. Increasing data suggest that as the time since vaccination increases, vaccine efficacy decreases. With many pregnant women getting influenza vaccines in September and October, they may have increased risk for late-season influenza. Additionally, outside traditional influenza season, providers may be less apt to suspect influenza, leading to delay in diagnosis. Data regarding the incidence and morbidity associated with late-season influenza in pregnancy is not well described.
