Pediatric Sleep Disorders: A Unique Opportunity for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

As Thomas Dekker stated, “Sleep is the golden chain that ties health and our bodies together,” and sleep is elemental to children’s health. After a restful night of sleep, children and adolescents are poised to interact with and learn from their environment. Alert and calm, they are ready to acquire new knowledge, bui ld positive peer and family relationships, and develop coping abilities for navigating challenging situations. They are apt to be physically active, deriving a host of related physical and mental health benefits, and are able to draw from optimal cognitive and emotional resources to support their pe rformance across social settings.
