21.2 cannabidiol in the treatment of psychotic disorders: evidence from clinical and preclinical studies

The cannabis plant has gained significant attention not only because of its psychoactive properties due to Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) but also for its nonpsychoactive component, cannabidiol (CBD). The studies have shown that the use of high-potency cannabis (high THC-to-CBD ratio or low in CBD) in youth has greater odds of precipitating psychosis. Given this THC-to-CBD ratio-dependent association wit h psychosis severity, CBD is postulated to antagonize the effects of THC or exhibit antipsychotic properties.
