24.1 management of aggression in medically hospitalized patients with autism spectrum disorder

Patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often exhibit increasingly agitated and possibly aggressive or violent behavior in the medical hospital setting. Staff may feel threatened, and pediatricians may be unfamiliar with managing uncontrolled behavior. Increased polypharmacy and progressively more restrictive measures are often not effective. The consulting child and adolescent psychiatrist may be looked to for guidance.
