24.2 hospital system challenges for the patient with autism spectrum disorder: strategies for getting "buy-in" from frontline staff

This presentation is designed to: 1) examine the basic tenants of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) that can impact a patient ’s experience in the hospital; 2) recognize that these differences from typical patients can impact how they interpret and react to care; 3) explore how a lack of staff education and innate biases impact patient and staff experiences; and 4) discuss strategies to improve education and address bias es to improve staff empathy for and comfort in caring for this population.
