62.4 what's normal, what's not... assessing sexual behaviors in children with intellectual developmental disorders

Children and teenagers with intellectual or developmental disability (IDD) experience atypical emotional and social development; however, their physical and sexual development is typical. This dyssynchronous development can lead to sexual dysfunction. The aim of this presentation is to familiarize clinicians with biological, psychosocial, and developmental factors that may contribute to sexual dysfunction in individuals with IDD. This will assist them in assessing sexual problem behaviors in a developmental context and making developmentally informed treatment recommendations.
