Osteoarthritis (OA) is a highly prevalent, disabling joint disease with an estimated rate of 33.6% in adults age 65 and older.1, 2 The lifetime risk of developing symptomatic knee OA is around 45% which can increase up to 61% in obese patients.3 The expected increase in symptomatic OA with an aging population and increasing obesity has been confirmed by recent studies showing a 5% increase in OA in the past 20 years.4 Treatment options for OA start with pharmacological management and culminate with surgical therapies like total knee arthroplasty.
