Rebuilding a tolerable life: narratives of women recovered from fibromyalgia.

Conclusion: Our findings show how the women explain their recovery in terms of overcoming fear of movement, making sense of their symptoms and becoming more active in everyday life. The close analysis reveals a recovery narrative portraying a complex and ambiguous process consisting of small dramas about the efforts trying to rebuild a meaningful life. CONCLUSIONS: Rehabilitation treatment based on motor imagery showed a stronger effect on anxiety and coping behavior than traditional physiotherapy in patients with FM. Integrated psychological support would be desirable in this setting. Further research is needed to explore the aspects investigated in more depth.PMID:34250931 | DOI:10.3233/BMR-200328

Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain disease with few effective therapeutic options. We evaluated the efficacy of a 12-weeks therapy program that involves the use of whole body vibration in patients with fibromyalgia. The experimental group (N = 20 patients) participated in a neuromuscular training with a rotational whole body vibration platform for 12 weeks. The control group (N = 20 patients) received no physiotherapy treatment. The following variables were assessed before, after and 3 months after the therapy program: Fibromyalgia impact questionnaire, pain intensity, quality of life, sensitivity measurements (pressure pain t...

In conclusion, these findings are promising but interpretation of the findings is limited due to the methodological quality of the studies. Well-designed clinical trials are needed to consolidate these dietary recommendations in FM patients.

AbstractBackground/Aims To examine the management of fibromyalgia patients referred to secondary care with respect to 2017 European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology (EULAR) guidelines.Methods Eighty-two patients referred to the Complex Musculoskeletal Clinic in the Rheumatology Department with a resulting diagnosis of fibromyalgia were included in the audit. Data was collected retrospectively via Electronic Patient Records over the study period of December 2017 to March 2020. Variable s assessed included patient demographics, clinical presentation at assessment and management. Statistical analyses were c...

Conclusion This report illustrates the spectrum of diagnoses seen within this unique service, highlighting a role for both Rheumatology and SEM within the same clinic. The low onward referral rate demonstrates appropriate triage and an efficient approach that is appropriate for this cohort of patients. It c ould reduce overall costs and patient journeys. Further work is required to streamline patient pathways, evaluate patient satisfaction and to determine whether the clinic is cost-effective and improves patient pathways.Disclosure J.A. Adv Exp Med Biol. 2021;1286:77-85. doi: 10.1007/978-3-030-55035-6_5.ABSTRACTFibromyalgia is a common chronic pain condition of unknown aetiology, although mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and inflammation have been implicated in the pathophysiology of this disorder. Treatment generally involves physiotherapy, anticonvulsants, and antidepressant therapy; however, the symptomatic relief conferred by these treatments can be very variable, and there is a need for additional therapeutic strategies. One such treatment which is gaining a lot of interest is the use of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) supplementation. The therapeut...

DISCUSSION: Pain physicians can play a role in the management of patients with endometriosis and COPCs. A multimodal therapy should include physiotherapy and pain-related psychological treatment and possibly centrally acting pain modulation medication.PMID:33576864 | DOI:10.1007/s00482-021-00535-8

This study uses scores from validated standardized questionnaires, algometer pressure point threshold (PPT) readings and responses from a custom self-developed questionnaire to determine the impact of a pressure-controlled custom manual protocol on FM hyperalgesia/allodynia, fatigue and patient’s quality of life. The results show that patient’s baseline sensitivity to pain inversely correlates with treatment response in FM. Moreover, post-stratification analysis unexpectedly reveals that patients presenting comorbid ME/CFS do not seem to respond to the applied therapy as those presenting FM only. Theref...

CONCLUSIONS: SDT has been delivered in multiple forms in the literature. SDT does not appear to be associated with any adverse effects and shows potential regarding its clinical efficacy. However, there is a lack of high-quality evidence upon which to make any firm clinical recommendations. PMID: 33078667 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
