Cocci Are in the Air

The San Joaquin Valley in Central California is a semiarid region that is known to be highly endemic for coccidioidomycosis infections in high-risk groups. Coccidioidomycosis, also known as valley fever, is caused by the fungal spore Coccidioides, which can be found in the soil in arid and semiarid regions in the Southwest United States and parts of Central and South America. When soil is disturbed through excavation, agricultural activities, or with any other soil movement, these activities can release the fungal spores into air; people who are in close proximity can potentially inhale them.

Background: Rift valley fever (RVF) is an emerging zoonotic disease of public and animal health concern which is endemic in many countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. The virus is transmitted between wildlife, domestic animals and humans via arthropod vectors. Information on Rift valley fever virus in wild and domestic animals is limited in Bauchi State, Nigeria despite the availability of Yankari Game Reserve and Sumu Wildlife Park with wildlife, livestock and people competing for resources leading to porous frontiers and potential for transmission of zoonoses.

In this study, the prevalence of Coccidioides was confirmed in different soil and dust samples collected near three military bases in California using DNA extraction and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) methods. Analyses of physical and chemical parameters revealed no significant differences between Coccidioides-positive and -negative sites. We report a considerable exposure to RVFV and CHIKV among Wami-Dakawa residents during the dry season and an absence of exposure of the viruses among hum ans in Magugu site. In both sites, no DENV exposure nor infection was detected.

This study is the first to confirm the presence ofCoccidioides in soils near Trona using a nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) approach. First responders to earthquake events, the public, and physicians in the San Joaquin Valley and the Mojave Desert should be informed about the risk of pathogen exposure during and after the time of an earthquake, since there are many fault lines in addition to the large San Andreas Fault and future earthquakes in this region are expected to occur.
