Antibiotic-Sparing Gonorrhea Diagnostic Wins Federal Funding

Physician offices could one day have a point-of-care gonorrhea test that not only delivers results within 30 minutes but also indicates the infecting strain ’s susceptibility to ciprofloxacin. In August, San Jose, California, startup Visby Medical, Inc won a $19 million federal prize to develop its prototype device, which could help thwart antimicrobial resistance by reducing unnecessary antibiotic use.
