Body-weight fluctuation and risk of diabetes in older adults: the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS)

Diabetes has reached an epidemic proportion in China, with the latest evidence showing that its prevalence has amounted to 10.9% in the general adults and 20.2% in the elderly aged ≥60 years [1]. Apart from physical inactivity [2,3], excess body weight like obesity is considered another modifiable risk factor for diabetes [4,5]. Yet a single measurement of body-weight that specifies the weight status such as obesity is not able to capture the dynamic change of body-weights d uring the subsequent follow-up years.
