Carbapenem-alternative strategies for complicated urinary tract infections: a systematic review of randomized controlled trials

Urinary Tract Infections (UTI) are the most common bacterial infections requiring antibiotic treatment in the western world. [1,2] The clinical spectrum of UTI includes urethritis, cystitis, prostatitis and pyelonephritis. Most UTIs have a rapid and favourable response to antibiotic treatment. [3] Complicated UTI (cUTI) is defined by the presence of systemic symptoms or susceptibility of the host for a complicated course, for example pregnancy or functional deficits of the urinary tract. [4] Most guidelines recommend treating cUTI with a 7-14 day course of antibiotics.
