Sexually Transmitted Infections: Overlooked, Underestimated, and Undiagnosed

For centuries, health care professionals have diligently worked to manage the health and lives of those they serve in an effort to reduce morbidity and mortality from various diseases. The evolution of evidence-based practices, health policies, and prevention programs has shifted disease management from tertiary preventive methods to more primary preventive methods. Morbidity and mortality, particularly in more developed countries, were historically tied to more infectious disease processes. With the implementation of public health interventions, there was a transition from infectious disease processes to chronic disease processes as the leading causes of death or disease-related complications.
