Individuals who start smoking in early adult life lose 10 years of life expectancy.1 Smoking is a risk factor for psoriasis [odds ratio (OR) of 1.94, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.64-2.28], hidradenitis suppurativa (HS, OR 1.90, 95% CI 1.84-1.96), healing delay (OR 2.07, 95% CI 1.53-2.81), surgical site infection (OR 1.79, 95% CI 1.57-2.04), wound complications (OR 2.27, 95% CI 1.82-2.84), and melanoma (relative risk 1.7, 95% CI 1.2-2.6).2-5 UK NHS stop-smoking services (SSS) provide behavioural support delivered by trained practitioners and pharmacotherapy.
