Beyond Biobanking: Future Use of Specimens and Data from Pediatric Participants

For more than a decade, researchers and ethicists have grappled with issues of parental permission, assent, return of results, and models of governance for pediatric biobanks.1-4 Although these evaluations have made important contributions to conversations regarding the design and management of pediatric biobanks, they fail to address the fact that most future uses of biospecimens and associated data collected from children may not actually fall within the biobanking framework. Plans for future use of data and biospecimens have now become a core component and expectation for all research.
