Shorter antibiotic regimens impact the control efforts in high tuberculosis burden regions of Taiwan

Over 60% of global tuberculosis (TB) incident cases are found in South-East Asian and Western Pacific regions (WHO, 2017). In Taiwan, TB has the highest incidence rate among all human communicable diseases. Between 2005 and 2015 in Taiwan, TB incidence rates ranged from 45.7 to 72.5 per 100000 population (Taiwan CDC, 2017). TB burden in Taiwan varies geographically, with the highest rates being 73.0 –137.8 and 69.8–115.2 per 100000 population in two counties in the eastern region, Hualien and Taitung, respectively (Taiwan CDC, 2017).
