Metabolic (Not Mechanical) Surgery for Metabolic Diseases

The landmark findings of the multicenter, $100 million ISCHEMIA (International Study of Comparative Health Effectiveness with Medical and Invasive Approaches) trial were recently presented at the meeting of the American Heart Association. The trial demonstrated that although the mechanical surgical procedures of coronary artery stenting or bypass might prevent cardiac damage early in an evolving MI, and provide relief for chronic angina, this therapy will not alter the prognosis for sustaining an MI or prolonging life expectancy.
