Psychological distress and diabetes self-management in patients with type 2 diabetes and comorbid serious mental illness

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease of the endocrine system characterized by abnormal glucose metabolism, the most common variety being type 2 diabetes (T2DM), which usually occurs in adults. The WHO estimates that 422 million people have diabetes and there is an increasing global prevalence (W.H.O., 2016). Uncontrolled T2DM may be associated with the development of complications such as macrovascular disease peripheral neuropathy and retinopathy that may induce quality-adjusted life-years decrements in patients (Shao, Yang, Fonseca, Stoecker,& Shi, 2019).
