Testing a method to improve predictions of disease and mortality risk in western lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) using allostatic load.

This report continues the development of ALIs as a clinical tool in wildlife while systematically testing one possible method for determining an optimal ALI for a particular species. PMID: 32228119 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Authors: Rehberger Likozar A, Zavrtanik M, Šebeštjen M Abstract Lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)) was discovered more than 50 years ago, and a decade later, it was recognized as a risk factor for coronary artery disease. However, it has gained importance only in the past 10 years, with emergence of drugs that can effectively decrease its levels. Lp(a) is a low-density lipoprotein with an added apolipoprotein(a) attached to the apolipoprotein B component via a disulfide bond. Circulating levels of Lp(a) are mainly genetically determined. Lp(a) has many functions, which include proatherosclerotic, prothrombotic, a...

Conclusion. Most hematological and biochemical profiles were significantly lower in the Schistosoma mansoni-positive group as compared with the control group. Most hematological and biochemical profiles decline significantly as the parasite density increased. Hence, with Schistosoma treatment, supportive treatment against hematological and biochemical disorders is recommended. PMID: 32454838 [PubMed]

Four retrospective studies from the United States, Europe, and Asia address outcomes in juvenile myasthenia gravis. Common features include earlier onset with ocular myasthenia gravis (MG) and generally good outcomes overall. Patients who were seronegative, had equivocal acetylcholine receptor (AChR) antibodies, or had only clustered AChR antibodies had better outcomes. An article highlighting the utility of median nerve slow-repetitive stimulation is reviewed and another showing the high sensitivity of repetitive nerve stimulation in myasthenic crisis is covered. Two articles address the thymus and thymectomy in non-AChR ...

CONCLUSION: Overall, we demonstrate that co-administration of soluble fibres viz. gum acacia, inulin and L. casei NCDC19 fermented milk exhibited the anti-adiposity effects, improved insulin sensitivity and dyslipidemia in mice via modulation of lipid mobilization genes. AbstractIntroductionLipid-lowering therapy of elderly patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) inherits a medical challenge, as these patients experience a higher absolute risk reduction but may be more prone to side effects. We aimed to evaluate the treatment patterns in lipid-lowering therapy, comparing CAD patients above versus below 75  years of age.MethodsWe retrospectively included patients with known CAD admitted to the West German Heart and Vascular Center. Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels and intensity of statin therapy (based on dosage and type of statin) were assessed from all available...

A 42 year-old male with premature atherosclerosis, severe dyslipidemia and resistance to treatment with high dose statin and a recommended dose of a PCSK9 inhibitor, was found to have a duplication of the PCSK9 gene. However, the clinical phenotype, which included a more than 15-fold elevation in circulating PCSK9, was unexpected given that he had one additional gene copy.

This study assesses the current practices of physicians in Lebanon routinely involved in ischemic stroke (IS) management. We conducted a prospective observational study of patients hospitalized at 8 different Lebanese hospitals in the period August 1, 2015 to July 31, 2016, with a diagnosis of acute stroke. Baseline characteristics and data on diagnostic studies, as well as treatments received during hospitalization and at discharge, were collected and analyzed. Two hundred and three strokes/transient ischemic attacks (TIAs) were recorded but only 173 patients (85%) with ischemic events were included in the study. The pati...

In this study, the levels of serum soluble gp91phox were measured to assess the oxidative stress in patients with SH. And the relationship among gp91phox, low-density lipoprotein-C (LDL-C), and TSH was also investigated. Methods: A total of 51 subjects were enrolled and categorized into four groups: the healthy controls subjects (n = 13), controls with high level of LDL-C alone (n = 12), SH with normal level of LDL-C (n = 11), and SH with high level of LDL-C (n = 15). The related clinical and laboratory data were collected for statistical analysis. All the patient...
