How Could Technology Revolutionize the Management of Laryngopharyngeal Reflux?

Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) is a prevalent condition in both general otolaryngology and laryngology. Scientists are faced with both the diagnostic and therapeutic controversies and the many “gray” areas related to LPR. Among those shades of gray are the poorly understood impact of diet and lifestyle, the lack of recognition/understanding of the variability in pH of the refluxate (acid, nonacid, and mixed and the impact this has on treatment options), and the nonspecific presenting signs and symptoms of LPR that may be called “diagnostic” but should realistically be called no more than “suspected.” Technological and scientific developments could provide interesting responses to some of these controversies.
