ConclusionsMaximal reduction of the rectal dose seems very important to prevent serious rectal hemorrhage. In addition, we should consider the risk of rectal toxicities in patients with abnormalities in the rectal mucosa, especially hemorrhoids.

Under the current pandemic of the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19) , cancer patients are considered to be one of the high-risk infected population[1].[2] As a radiation oncology center in general hospital, the influence of fever patients during the treatment are largely unknown. So we retrospectively studied the clinical characteristics of febrile patients who received radiation therapy during the period of covid-19 infection, from Peking Union Medical College Hospital of China, analyzed the clinical characteristics and risk factors of febrile patients, concluded screening and treatment procedure of cancer patients with ...

In France, as in most countries, strict strategies were implemented in cancer hospitals to reduce the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19), but to maintain as much as possible the capacity of oncology health services [1,2]. These strategies included the reduction of elective services, an emphasis on remote visits, and the use of personal protective equipment [3 –7]. International radiation therapy (RT) academic societies proposed to restrict the indications for treatment [8], to delay as long as possible the start of non-urgent treatments and to prefer hypofractionated regimens [9–16].

In this study, we glycoengineered MCF-7 breast cancer cells using a series of non-natural Sia precursors, which are prolonged in their acyl side chain. We observed a significant reduction in the natural Sia (N-Acetylneuraminic acid) expression after cultivation of MCF-7 cells with these Sia precursors. In addition, the expression of polySia, a unique glycosylation of the neural cell adhesion molecule NCAM, which interferes with cell adhesion, was decreased. We conclude that sialic acid engineering i) opens up novel opportunities to study the biological role of Sia in breast cancer and ii) provides a toolbox to examine the ...

(University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus) The international First-line Radiosurgery for Small-Cell Lung Cancer (FIRE-SCLC) analysis led by University of Colorado Cancer Center researchers and published today in JAMA Oncology shows no overall survival benefit with whole-brain radiation therapy compared with radiosurgery in patients with small cell lung cancer.

Trott and colleagues wrote an editorial [1] on our manuscript in which we argue that in the absence of supportive pre-clinical or clinical data for using radiation therapy for viral pneumonia, the risks of low dose thoracic radiotherapy make clinical trials testing radiation therapy as a treatment for COVID-19 pneumonia unacceptable [2]. Trott et al. concur with our interpretation of the available pre-clinical data testing low dose radiotherapy in animal models of viral pneumonia: “They really do not meet criteria of good experimental practice in radiation biology.

68Ga-labeled prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) PET/CT is increasingly used in men with biochemical recurrence (BCR) after radical prostatectomy (RP), but its longer-term prognostic or predictive potential in these men is unknown. The aim of this study was to evaluate the predictive value of PSMA PET for a 3-y freedom from progression (FFP) in men with BCR after RP undergoing salvage radiotherapy (sRT). Methods: This prospective multicenter study enrolled 260 men between 2015 and 2017. Eligible patients were referred for PSMA PET with a rising level of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) after RP. Management after PSMA ...

Conclusions: The use of palliative RT was associated with 5 times lower total symptom scores compared with nonuse. Similar beneficial results were found for several component scores. These patient-reported outcomes strongly suggest that providers should consider palliative radiation for symptomatic multiple myeloma patients. These data should be prospectively validated in a larger cohort of myeloma patients. PMID: 32496846 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
