Abstract The extract of Lycium bark (LBE), which is the root bark of Lycium chinense, has long been used in China for hypertension, inflammation, and diabetes. LBE has been reported to ameliorate hyperglycemia in mice with alloxan-induced type 1 diabetes, but evidence on the effect of LBE in diabetes had not been enough. Therefore, we investigated the effects of LBE on type 2 diabetes using db/db mice. Nine-week-old male db/db mice were orally administered LBE (425 mg/kg) for 10 weeks. Blood samples were collected under anesthesia for the determination of blood glucose and insulin levels. The blood glucose ...

Authors: Turna CK, Arslan ZI, Alparslan V, Okyay K, Solak M Abstract BACKGROUND: Obesity causes various difficulties in intubation and ventilation, which are confronted due to increased fat tissue in the upper airway and diminished compliance in the chest wall. Videolaryngoscopes and Intubating Laryngeal Mask Airway (ILMA) are good options as recommended by the American Society of Anesthesologists (ASA) difficult airway guidelines. We aimed to compare ILMA and Airtraq (a channeled videolaryngoscope) in obese patients. METHODS: Eighty patients with ASA physical status I-III, aged between 18 and 65 years and with...

CONCLUSIONS: The combination of propofol with remifentanil at a dose of 0.2 μg.kg-1 was effective in improving the quality of sedation, and at doses of 0.2 μg.kg-1 and 0.3 μg.kg-1 reduced the time to spontaneous eye opening and post-anesthetic recovery in comparison to sedation with propofol administered alone. CONCLUSIONS: The epidemiology of both perioperative CA and mortality events reported in Brazilian studies does not show important differences and, in general, is similar to studies in developed countries. However, sepsis represents one of the major causes of perioperative CA and mortality in Brazilian studies, contrasting with studies in developed countries in which sepsis is a secondary cause.
