Diabetes is one of the most prevalent non-communicable diseases, affecting approximately 425 million people worldwide. It is expected to affect 629 million people by 2045 [1]. Diabetes and diabetes-related complications have significant effects on the healthcare system and have become major public health concerns [2,3]. Among numerous complications, diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a major microvascular disease that is a leading cause of vision impairment and blindness in the working population (aged 20 –65 years).
