Multiple Sclerosis; A New Global Database

First the bad news:  It looks like the incidence of multiple sclerosis has jumped by about 10% since 2008. The good news: At least someone is keeping track… and we have access to their data. The Multiple Sclerosis International Federation (MSIF) conducted a global study of MS in 2013 and the information has just been released on the website AtlasOfMS.org I’ve only scratched a bit of the surface of this site, but it seems to have loads of information in this site for the digging.  Not that much of it will be stuff that the everyday Joe or Jane will need to get on with the business of living with MS, but still.  If knowledge is power, I believe that information is the first spark of knowledge. I will say that the video which launched the Atlas appears to have been made by someone who has little understanding of the way MS can affect a person.  Words zoom, spin, appear, vanish and ungulate across, around and through the screen.  But it’s not the flashy video I’m interested in.  It’s the data. Living away from my home chapter of the National MS Society and its wonderful support staff has made me realize how great that service and support net was for me.  Looking at facts like 1 in 5 people in the world with multiple sclerosis have no MS support organization has made me even more grateful for the wonderful people, around the globe, who work on our behalf.
