Diabetes living

So, here’s what I’m learning from life with Type 2 Diabetes. To start with, I found it quite boring to have to be planning what I was going to be eating, all the time. But now that I’ve got in to the habit of it it doesn’t require that much thought at all. I’ve put a jar of cereal bars and packets of dried fruit in the porch so that if I’m going out I can pick something up and put it in my handbag. (Not the dog biscuits.) There are a few failsafes that I know I can eat, and I don’t have to think too hard about, and I always have around anyway. (Peanut butter, crackers, apples, dates.) There is always fish or chicken or a tomato-ey pasta thing on a menu. It’s relatively easy not to eat sweets and cake. The thing that has surprised me as I’ve paid closer attention to my diet is how much cheese and ham I used to eat. That was pretty much my default sandwich/snack setting. (I could get a little nostalgic for a cheese and jam sandwich.) I have no intention of becoming a fussy eater, or a slave to diabetes. I’ve decided that I will allow myself one Proper Pudding a week (last week’s was cherry crumble and custard, and very good it was too). And although I am trying to avoid red meat, cheese and fatty foods, if I went out for dinner and found that the only thing that would really do, in that moment, was one of those lovely gourmet burgers with big fat chips on the side, then the lovely gourmet burger with big fat chips on the side it would be.
