Coordinating Assessment of Spiritual Needs: A Cross-Walk of Narrative and Psychometric Assessment Tools Used in Palliative Care (S784)

Addressing spiritual needs of seriously-ill patients improve patient experiences and clinical outcomes. While its assessment is mandated by several accrediting organizations, there is no one gold standard approach for assessment of patients' spiritual care needs during serious illness. Further, non-chaplain healthcare providers typically assess spiritual needs differently than chaplains and thus there is little shared language or cross-disciplinary evaluation framework across disciplines. This discrepancy impedes provision of both team-based and patient-centered care.
