Ultrasonic detection and characterization of delamination and rich resin in thick composites with waviness

Addressing the challenges for ultrasonic inspection caused by waviness, multi-layer structure, and multiple defect types, ultrasound propagation in thick wavy composite was investigated through a dedicated numerical model built in OnScale®. Key features of ultrasonic testing and composite sample, including water immersion environment, fiber waviness, uneven inter-ply resin distribution, and side-drilled hole (SDH)-simulated delamination, were embraced in the model. Via this model, waviness and thick resin layers were found to cause disturbance and wave vector deviation to inter-ply reflection signal and thus introduce difficulties for delamination detection based just on the signal to noise ratio. In addition, reflections from inter-ply resin and SDH were revealed with different reliance on probe frequencies. Using a 5 MHz probe with time corrected gain, ultrasonic testing in wavy composite was performed experimentally. CONCLUSIONS: In cases of BCCs with thickness of ≤1 mm, there was a high correlation (r=0.870) of the tumor spread depth between micromorphological measurements and the results obtained using a 75 MHz transducer and in cases of BCCs with thickness of>1 mm, a very high correlation (r=0.951) of the tumor spread depth was observed between histomorphometry and30 MHz transducer measurements. Quantitative ultrasound (QUS) techniques have been demonstrated to detect cell death in vitro and in vivo. Recently, multi-feature classification models have been incorporated into QUS texture-feature analysis methods to increase further the sensitivity and specificity of detecting treatment response in locally advanced breast cancer patients. To effectively incorporate these analytic methods into clinical applications, QUS and texture-feature estimations should be independent of data acquisition systems.

ConclusionsFor women with previous OASI, a subsequent vaginal birth is suitable for those with no bowel symptoms and normal EAUS and caesarean section is reasonable for women who do not have normal bowel functionand/or normal EAUS findings; however, for some of these women bowel symptoms and QoL may be worsened.
