Addressing America's high premature birth rate
Chances are you know someone who was born prematurely. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the rate of preterm births is going up. Last year, one in 10 American babies was born before 37 weeks gestation. Author Sarah DiGregorio ("Early: An Intimate History of Premature Birth and What It Teaches Us About Being Human") talks about one of the biggest public health threats facing this country.
miano AE, Sánchez-Margalet V Abstract Water is the major component of cells and tissues. The fetal body consists of about 70-90% water and its fluid balance is dependent on the mother. In fact, abortion, premature birth, amniotic fluid volume abnormality, malformation and fetal growth restrictions might result when the homeostasis of the maternal-fetal fluid exchange is disrupted. Thus, maternal-fetal fluid balance is critical during pregnancy. In this sense, several mechanisms, including aquaporins (AQPs) have been reported to play important roles in maternal-fetal fluid balance. AQPs are small membrane pr...
Researchers have gained understanding of a complex biological process that stimulates production of alveolar in the lungs of babies -- without which, premature infants are more susceptible to microbial infections.
(Karolinska Institutet) Children conceived with assisted reproductive techniques including IVF have a somewhat higher mortality risk during their first weeks of life than children conceived naturally, according to a study by researchers at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden published in the journal Fertility and Sterility. The researchers link the increased risk to a higher degree of premature births in IVF children and emphasize that the risk of infant mortality is still very small for both groups.
Different charts are used to assess premature growth. The Fenton chart, based on prenatal growth, has been used in the neonates ’ intensive care unit (NICU) of the Notre Dame des Secours University Hospital to ...
This study highlights the potential benefit of using iPSCs to repair damaged lung tissue through possible modulation of the inflammatory response, leading to novel therapies for acute hyperoxia-induced lung injury and the prevention of bronchopulmonary dysplasia. PMID: 32051754 [PubMed]
CONCLUSION: Coarctation stenting can be carried out safely in small children. Usually, the stent has to be removed or redilated later. Results are encouraging. PMID: 32056092 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
As the number of preterm births rises, families are shouldering unexpected out-of-pocket expenses.
Pregnant women who take a daily baby aspirin may reduce the risk for premature birth.

Abstract Introduction: Over the last few years, in the development of neonatology, the limits to which it is possible to sustain the lives of premature babies have been extended, and thus the proportion of survivors with chronic morbidities has increased. Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), intraventricular haemorrhage (IVH) and bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), all of which deeply influence the quality of life, life expectancy and social integration, are the most significant morbidities among premature newborns. Aim: Description of psychomotor development of low birth weight (
