Conclusions: Despite the small sample and the possible underdiagnosis by simple PG, we highlight the elevated prevalence (26.3%) of non-previously diagnosed OSA. Finally, pts with higher risk for OSA also seems to have a worse impact of RA on their QoL and ESS/SBS could be effective in the screening of these pts.

This article will discuss a few factors that influence migraine (mostly episodic) and its treatment, such as sleep, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), obesity, and affective disorders, as well as autoimmune diseases. Practitioners must be aware of these coexisting conditions (comorbidities) as they affect treatment. It is noted in literature that both the quantity (too much or too few hours) and the quality (OSA related) of sleep may worsen migraine frequency. An associated risk factor for OSA, obesity also increases migraine frequency in episodic migraine cases. A bidirectional relationship with migraine along with depression...

Rationale: Tracheobronchomalacia (TBM) refers to the weakening trachea or the trachea loss of structural integrity of airway cartilaginous structures. It causes tracheal stenosis, resulting in significantly high rates of mortality. Bronchoplasty by high-pressure balloon dilation under general anesthesia is a simple but effective and safe method to treat tracheobronchial stenosis. However, recurrent postoperative dyspnea after extubation due to tracheal collapse is still a challenge for anesthetists. Patient concerns: A 52-year-old man weighing 72 kg was scheduled for balloon dilatation surgery under general anesthes...

Follow me on Twitter @RobShmerling Ever wonder what other people are wondering about? I know I do. So, here are the top 10 health searches in Google for 2017. And just so you don’t have to look each one up, I’ve provided a brief answer. You’re welcome. 1.  What causes hiccups? I was surprised this one made it to the top 10 list of health searches. Maybe this search is common because hiccups are as mysterious as they are universal. I’ve written about hiccups before, but let’s just say the cause in any individual person is rarely known or knowable. Then again, the reason hiccups stop is als...

CONCLUSION: Patients with RA may be at increased risk of OSA secondary to both traditional and RA-related risk factors. Diagnosis with OSA predicts future CVD in RA and may provide an opportunity for CVD intervention. PMID: 28765254 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Sometimes I need to let my inner rebel out and stop being such a good patient. I usually try to be a good patient (and go to my appointments, take my meds as prescribed, talk to my doctors honestly and generally do what they want me to). But not right now.Last fall I was told I have sleep apnea and my doctors want me to have a CPAP machine for sleeping. I got my CPAP machine and hate it. I can't stand having anything on my face while I sleep. I am on my second mask and still cannot deal with it. I wake up and want to rip it off my face. If I sleep with the mask on, I don't ever feel rested and have the weirdest dreams.I we...

Abstract Arterial stiffness has been recognized as a marker of cardiovascular disease and associated with long-term worse clinical outcomes in several populations. Age, hypertension, smoking, and dyslipidemia, known as traditional vascular risk factors, as well as diabetes, obesity, and systemic inflammation lead to both atherosclerosis and arterial stiffness. Targeting multiple modifiable risk factors has become the main therapeutic strategy to improve arterial stiffness in patients at high cardiovascular risk. Additionally to life style modifications, long-term ω-3 fatty acids (fish oil) supplementation in...

Authors: Buczko P, Zalewska A, Szarmach I Abstract Saliva is a liquid environment of the oral ecosystem that to some extent reflects the local state of oral cavity or the general state of health of the human body. Since saliva reflects general health status of the human organism and is easy to collect, it can be used as a non-invasive diagnostic tool. In the present review the authors discuss and highlight the role of oxidant-antioxidant balance in the blood and saliva in human pathology. Particularly, the evaluation of oxidative stress status was proposed as an important factor in diagnosing the development and pr...
