Prevalence of oral diseases and risks to oral health in an urban community aged above 14 years

Conclusion: This study showed a high prevalence of dental caries, periodontal problem, and tooth wear. This emphasizes the need for community-based awareness program on dental health and recommends periodic dental health screening program at the community level for early diagnosis and better treatment.

This article examines the aetiology of Ludwig's angina and considers the presentation, diagnosis and treatment of a patient who presented to an out-of-hours streaming area of a local emergency department, with an emphasis on the importance of a multidisciplinary approach. It also considers the need for ongoing education and awareness of health professionals to ensure the successful diagnosis, management and treatment of this condition, particularly in the context of patients with poor access to dental care presenting first to the emergency department. Recent results of randomized trials testing the efficacy of xylitol in caries prevention have been conflicting. This narrative review reveals the sources of discrepancy. The following databases were searched for the terms “xylitol” or “artificial sweeteners” restricted to the English language: PubMed, Web of Science, Evidenced-Based Medicine, Scopus, and the Cochrane database. In a separate search, the terms “dental caries” or “cariogenicity” or “glucosyltransferase” or “low glycemic” or “lo w insulinemic” or “dysbiosis” or &ldq...

In conclusion, probiotic strain 7746 might antagonize the initiation and progression of dental caries by reducing S. mutans if not too abundant. S. dentisani strains inhibit each other, but strains with similar bacteriocin-related gene clusters, including immunity genes, are able to co-exist due to cross-resistance. In addition, development of resistance and adaptation to 7746-bacteriocins was observed during our study and needs attention. Hence, mechanisms underlying such processes need to be further investigated using omics-approaches. On the manufacturing level, probiotic strains should be continuously tested for functi...

Conclusion: Saliva microbiota diversity and composition were significantly associated with body size and gender in Finnish children. Body size–specific saliva microbiota profiles open new avenues for studying the potential roles of microbiota in weight development and management. Introduction The composition and diversity of the human microbiota may be an important factor in health and disease (Cho and Blaser, 2012). Several studies have proposed that changes in the human gut microbiota may alter pathogenic mechanisms, which are associated with the development of obesity and insulin resistance (Musso et al., ...

Authors: Barroso H, Ramalhete R, Domingues A, Maci S Abstract Through the years, tea consumption has been associated with good health, and some publications are related to oral health. The bioactive components of green tea are thought to be able to influence the process of caries formation through inhibition of proliferation of the streptococcal agent, interference with the process of bacterial adhesion to tooth enamel, and inhibition of glucosyl transferase and amylase; however, little is known about black tea and oral health. The aim of the present in-vitro study was to determine the inhibitory activity of a nove...

Background: Blood stream infections in patients with central venous catheters may arise from translocation of bacteria through a non-intact mucosa. These infections are known as mucosal barrier injury –laboratory confirmed blood stream infections (MBI-LCBI). Currently there are no proven strategies to prevent bacteremia secondary to mucosal barrier injury after hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT). Xylitol is a non-fermentable sugar alcohol that reduces dental caries, plaque accumulation, and oral disease progression by inhibiting bacterial growth and reducing pathogenic community development.

ConclusionsChildren in OOHC have high health needs. Comprehensive health assessments offer an opportunity to better identify and manage these needs. High hepatitis C exposure in utero was unexpected. This study highlights the need for comprehensive health screening assessments for all children in OOHC. OOHC clinic data can be helpful in planning broad interventions for children in OOHC.
