Medical Mission Trip?--Using Spanish
I'm a pre-med freshman and our pre-med club is having a trip of about 12 or so of us (out of 350) to a Latin American country next summer. I study Spanish and will continue to study it and I feel a connection with their culture more than other places, but the trip is only 2 weeks. It also costs ~$3000, though I may get some aid from my university.
Supposedly, we'll get quite a bit of medical experience and training at some hospitals and clinics there. There are a lot of things that are legal there for us. Some of what we would be doing:
-assisting with practically everything except surgery, mostly birth, vaccinations, ER
-pharmacology training, assisting
-phlebotomy training and taking/testing blood and urine
-antiparasitic treatments
-pediatric physical exams
-pap smears (yay), fetal monitoring, other women's health
-more medical Spanish training
-presentations to community
If I can get some financial aid, does this seem worth it? Yes, I'm sure I'm going into medicine.. Since I study Spanish, would this type of trip seem more meaningful to med schools? Or would I need some follow-up since it's just 2 weeks? I know there are a lot of these questions on here, but they're all someone randomly going just to boost their application. Yeah, I want to help mine as well, but I want to use the Spanish I know to help people and learn some cool stuff. Also, I can do this as a sophomore or junior if that seems better, I just want to make sure as soon as I can if I actually want to do ...
