This study assessed whether MBBF in the femoral neck (FN) is preserve d in the context of inhibited remodeling in subjects receiving denosumab. This open ‐label study enrolled postmenopausal women with osteoporosis who had received ≥2 doses of denosumab (60 mg subcutaneously Q6M) per standard of care and were planning elective total hip replacement (THR) owing to osteoarthritis of the hip. Transverse sections of the FN were obtained after THR and analyzed histomorphometrically. MBBF, based on fluorochrome labeling and presence of smooth cement lines, was evaluated in cancellous, endocortical, and periosteal envelopes o...

Conclusion: Muscle strength as measured by grip strength and knee extension was statistically significantly correlated with the WOMAC scores in patients with knee symptoms regardless of whether radiologic signs of knee osteoarthritis were observed.

ConclusionsDespite a similar prevalence of comorbid medical conditions, severe functional limitations were significantly more common among multiple primary survivors than single primary survivors or individuals without cancer.Implications for Cancer SurvivorsAssessment of functional status and treatment of physical deficits may be an especially critical component of care for older patients with a history of multiple cancer diagnoses.

In this study, we intravenously administrated the young mitochondria into aged mice to evaluate whether energy production increase in aged tissues or age-related behaviors improved after the mitochondrial transplantation. The results showed that heterozygous mitochondrial DNA of both aged and young mouse coexisted in tissues of aged mice after mitochondrial administration, and meanwhile, ATP content in tissues increased while reactive oxygen species (ROS) level reduced. Besides, the mitotherapy significantly improved cognitive and motor performance of aged mice. Our study, at the first report in aged animals, not only prov...

This popular science article is a decent introduction to the still young field of senolytic therapies to selectively destroy senescent cells in aged tissues. That said, the author fails to note any of the numerous senolytic programs other than those of the Mayo Clinic and Unity Biotechnology - which represent an increasingly small portion of the field as a whole. The accumulation of lingering senescent cells is one of the contributing causes of aging; these errant cells secrete a potent mix of signals that spur chronic inflammation, change cellular behavior for the worse, and destructively remodel tissue structure. Senolyt...

Authors: Fragkiadaki P, Nikitovic D, Kalliantasi K, Sarandi E, Thanasoula M, Stivaktakis PD, Nepka C, Spandidos DA, Tosounidis T, Tsatsakis A Abstract Osteoarthritis (OA) and osteoporosis (OP) are associated skeletal pathologies and have as a distinct feature the abnormal reconstruction of the subchondral bone. OA and OP have been characterized as age-related diseases and have been associated with telomere shortening and altered telomerase activity (TA). This review discusses the role of telomeres and telomerase in OA and OP pathologies and focuses on the usability of telomere length (TL) and the rate of telomere s...

This study aimed to evaluate the validity of the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index Short Form (WOMAC-SF) for the assessment of musculoskeletal disorders. We evaluated whether WOMAC-SF correlated with the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule 12 (WHODAS-12) and Kaigo-Yobo questionnaires for assessing health-outcomes in Korea. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study used data from the Namgaram-2 cohort. WOMAC, WOMAC-SF, WHODAS-12, and Kaigo-Yobo questionnaires were administered to patients with musculoskeletal disorders, including radiology-confirmed knee osteoarthrit...
