Protocol for a partially nested randomized controlled trial to evaluate the effectiveness of the Scleroderma Patient-centered Intervention Network Support Group Leader EDucation (SPIN-SSLED) Program

This study is aimed at measuring the thyroxine requirement in hypothyroid patients with UC. Patients and Methods: Among 8,573 patients with thyroid disorders consecutively seen in our referral center from 2010 to 2017, we identified 34 patients with a definite diagnosis of UC. Thirteen of them were hypothyroid (12 F/1 M; median age = 53 years), bearing UC during the remission phase and in need for thyroxine treatment, thus representing the study group. The dose of T4 required by UC patients has been compared to the one observed in 51 similarly treated age- and weight-matched patients, compliant with treatment and clearly ...

ConclusionsOur systematic review update found that there is presently insufficient evidence on the effectiveness of training and support programs for peer leaders of disease-based support groups, highlighting the need for well-designed and rigorously conducted RCTs to examine the effects of training for peer leaders of support groups, especially in a rare disease context. The Scleroderma Patient-centered Intervention Network ’s trial of the Scleroderma Support group Leader EDucation Program will serve as such a trial.Systematic review registrationPROSPEROCRD42018096369

CONCLUSION: When faced with significant challenges while coping with scleroderma, patients develop strategies to manage better and improve their quality of life. To help them cope, patients would benefit from easier access to supportive interventions, including tailored scleroderma self-management programs. Although the challenges experienced by patients with scleroderma are unique, findings from this study might help better understand patients' perspectives regarding coping and disease management for other chronic diseases as well. Implications for Rehabilitation People living with rare diseases, including the rare autoim...

CONCLUSION: An attempt at explaining the possible link between these disorders and migraine is discussed at the end of the review. Several autoimmune alterations are shared by most autoimmune diseases and headache types. Endothelial dysfunction is the only alteration that is common among all these disorders. CONCLUSIONS: Morphea seems to be an autoimmune disease where the impact of HERV is not so apparent. It seems that probing many patients for the expression of just a few sequences is not as effective as previously expected. For initial studies of HERV in other diseases we recommend high throughput techniques such as HERV-dedicated DNA microarrays or massive parallel sequencing. PMID: 28261031 [PubMed - in process]
