ConclusionIncidence of incidental carcinoma gallbladder is 0.51%, most commonly affecting middle-aged females. Risk factors associated with incidental carcinoma gallbladder were found to be multiple gallbladder calculi, single large stone, and gallbladder polyps. Survival is better in males, young patients with uneventful primary surgery and better-differentiated pathology.

Three phase III trials have been recently published exploring the role of adjuvant chemotherapy in resected cholangiocarcinoma and gallbladder cancer. The trials differ in some of the baseline characteristics which may explain why only the BILCAP trial (capecitabine vs observation) was the only study showing benefit in favour of adjuvant chemotherapy in resected biliary tract cancer.
