AbstractSummaryWe conducted a phenome-wide Mendelian randomization analysis (MR-PheWAS) to survey health effects associated with high normal serum calcium. We found causal evidence for conditions related to renal function, bone and joint health, and cardiovascular risk. These conditions collectively suggest that tissue calcification may be a key mechanism through which serum calcium influences health.IntroductionCalcium is essential for the normal functioning of the cardiovascular system, muscles, and nerves. In this MR-PheWAS study, we sought to capture the totality of health effects associated with high normal serum calc...

ConclusionsSeveral circulating lymphocyte subpopulations in patients with ISM were significantly different when compared to healthy controls; and in specific lymphocyte subsets, this lymphocyte skewing correlated with clinical observations including osteoporosis and autoimmune disease. These data suggest the need for further studies on abnormalities in lymphocyte subsets and the attendant clinical consequences in both mast cell proliferative and activation disorders.

BackgroundThe purpose of this study was to further clarify the relationship between chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) and osteoporosis in a Korean population.MethodsThe Korean National Health Insurance Service ‒National Sample Cohort, with subjects ≥50 years old, was assessed for the time period 2002‐2013. In total, 68,459 osteoporosis participants were matched with 68,459 control participants at a ratio of 1:1 with respect to age, sex, income group, region of residence, hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia. We analyzed previous histories of CRS with/without nasal polyp in the osteoporosis and control groups. CRS and...

Conclusions The clinical trials discussed here, which include several trials investigating novel therapeutic targets, demonstrate that translational research in pemphigus and pemphigoid is a fast-growing field. We thus expect that several novel treatments will be shortly available for the treatment of pemphigus and pemphigoid patients. Given the high, and thus far unmet, medical need in this field (110), this is highly encouraging and will hopefully improve the quality of life of the affected patients. In addition to the compounds and targets described here, several new targets have been recently identified in preclinical...

Conclusions World population is aging and the increase in life expectancy is often unhealthy. In particular, musculoskeletal aging, which leads to sarcopenia and osteoporosis, has several causes such as changes in body composition, inflammation, and hormonal imbalance. Sarcopenia, osteoporosis, and more frequently, sarcopenic obesity are commonly associated with aging and frequently closely linked each other, often leading to the development of a frailty syndrome. Frailty syndrome favors an increased risk of loss function in daily activities, for cardiovascular diseases, cancers, falls, and mortality. As the number of eld...

In this study, we investigated the protective effects of geniposide on dexamethasone (DEX)-induced osteogenic inhibition in MC3T3-E1 cells. The results showed that there was no obvious toxicity on MC3T3-E1 cells when geniposide was used at the doses ranging from 1 to 75 μM. In DEX-treated MC3T3-E1 cells, geniposide promoted the alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity and the mineralization. In addition, geniposide also significantly increased the mRNA and protein expression of osteopontin (OPN), Runt-related transcription factor 2 (Runx2), and Osterix (Osx) in DEX-treated MC3T3-E1 cells. Furthermore, geniposide activated ER...

Conclusion This paper summarizes the current findings regarding the anti-colitis activity of plant-derived alkaloids and shows how these alkaloids exhibit significant and beneficial effects in alleviating colonic inflammation. These natural alkaloids are not only promising agents for IBD treatment but are also components for developing new wonder drugs. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms or toxicological evaluation of most plant-derived alkaloids still require much scientific research, and their actual efficacies for IBD patients have not been verified well in field research. Thus, further clinical trials to elu...

This study aimed to evaluate TBS in asthmatics in comparison to propensity score-matched controls and to investigate correlations between TBS and cumulative systemic and inhaled corticosteroid doses 1 year prior to bone mineral density (BMD) measurement in patients with asthma. METHODS: In total, 627 patients with asthma and the same number of non-asthmatic controls matched for sex and age were included in this retrospective cohort study. TBS was calculated in the lumbar region, based on 2 dimensional projections of dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. RESULTS: Patients with severe asthma exhibited lower vertebral TBS...
