This report describes 2 patients with UC in whom postoperative pain following oral and maxillofacial surgery was managed by intravenous patient-controlled analgesia with pentazocine. Apart from the development of acute dystonia in 1 case that was likely due to the use of droperidol for prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting, postoperative pain was well controlled by pentazocine in both patients without any complications or UC exacerbations. This article aims to provide a concise overview of the anatomy, physiology, and molecular biology of sacroiliitis to aid clinicians in the assessment and management of sacroiliitis. For this narrative review, we evaluated articles in English published before August 2019 in PubMed. Then, we selected articles related to the painful manifestations of the sacroiliac joint. From the retrieved articles, we found that chronic sacroiliitis may be caused by various forms of spondyloarthritis, such as ankylosing spondyloarthritis. Sacroiliitis can also be associated with inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn's disease, gout, tuberculosi...

Basel, 10 August 2020 - Roche (SIX: RO, ROG; OTCQX: RHHBY) today announced topline results from its phase III study programme evaluating the investigational medicine etrolizumab in people with moderately to severely active ulcerative colitis. Mixed results were seen in studies evaluating etrolizumab as an induction therapy, and both studies evaluating etrolizumab as a maintenance therapy failed to meet their primary endpoints, showing no significant difference in the proportion of people achieving remission with subcutaneous etrolizumab versus placebo. In the HIBISCUS I induction study, in people without prior anti-tumour ...

In this study, we examined the effects of oxytocin on the Aβ-induced impairment of synaptic plasticity in mice. To investigate the effect of oxytocin on synaptic plasticity, we prepared acute hippocampal slices for extracellular recording and assessed long-term potentiation (LTP) with perfusion of the Aβ active fragment (Aβ25-35) in the absence and presence of oxytocin. We found that oxytocin reversed the impairment of LTP induced by Aβ25-35 perfusion in the mouse hippocampus. These effects were blocked by pretreatment with the selective oxytocin receptor antagonist L-368,899. Furthermore, the tr...

Abstract Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) is a potentially life-threatening complication of allogeneic stem cell transplantation (Allo-SCT). Chronic GVHD, which typically presents more than 100 days after Allo-SCT, can resemble manifestations of autoimmune disease; however, there are only a few reports on the development of Crohn's disease (CD) after Allo-SCT. Here, we report a case of steroid-refractory CD after umbilical cord blood transplantation (CBT), which was dramatically improved with administration of anti-tumor necrosis factor-alpha (anti-TNF-alpha) antibodies. A 21-year-old woman with refractory Hodgkin...

CONCLUSIONS: This study on dry eye confirmed but also refuted many risk factors from smaller epidemiological studies, and discovered numerous new risk factors in multiple etiological categories. The finding that dry eye symptoms are particularly common in young adults is concerning, and warrants further study. PMID: 32376389 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

CONCLUSION: Both, hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are able to restore damaged tissue and regulate the immune system. Autologous HSCs transplantation eliminates autoreactive cells and replace them with new T-cells resulting a long-time remission. Whereas MSCs transplantation is effective therapy in one of the major complications of IBD, perianal fistulas. PMID: 32364073 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Hairy, scary, funny looking or pretty cool. The beasts in the Harry Potter universe are quite the diverse bunch with unique abilities and qualities. Just like new digital health tech targeted to fight autoimmune diseases or for the main part: their symptoms. Source: Warner Bros. Framestore The common ground for completely different illnesses like type 1 diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and multiple sclerosis is an immune system disfunction. Immune cells and mechanisms target the body’s own cells and structures, deconstructing it bit by bit and inducing inflammation. An estim...

CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest a general high diagnostic yield for EGD in pediatric patients, stemming mainly from patients in whom a specific condition was suspected a priori. However, the role of the procedure in the diagnosis and management of non-specific gastrointestinal complaints was minor suggesting that EGD may be superfluous for some of these patients.
