The ‘connectaholic’ behind the curtain: medical student use of computer devices in the clinical setting and the influence of patients

The use of mobile devices such as tablets and laptops by students to support their learning is now ubiquitous. The clinical setting is an environment, which lends itself to the use of mobile devices as student...

Glucocorticoids are widely used in the treatment of numerous inflammatory conditions, including sepsis. Unfortunately, patient response to glucocorticoid therapy can be inconsistent. Variations in the human glucocorticoid receptor (hGR) may contribute to the differential patient response. We screened for hGR variants in the buffy coats of burn patients and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) treated with lipopolysaccharide. Three novel splice variants containing cryptic exons were upregulated in the PBMCs after lipopolysaccharide exposure at 3 and 13 h with the greatest observed expression at 3 h. Luciferase ass...

As the 11 veterans who have been treated through the UCLA Health Operation Mend program began their 1.2-mile trek for the 100th New York City ’s Veteran’s Day parade, they took a moment to reflect. For many of them, the day was a powerful mark on their collective journey toward healing their wounds of war.Almost 100 people joined the Operation Mend contingent, including family members, supporters, staff, friends and other veterans as they walked by thousands of people lining Fifth Avenue cheering the veterans for their service, sacrifices and resilience. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic bacterium associated with healthcare infections in intensive care units (ICUs), ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), surgical site infections, and burns. This bacterium causes 75% of death in burned patients, since it can develop a persistent biofilm associated with infections, express several virulence factors, and antibiotic-resistance mechanisms. Some of these virulence factors are proteases such as elastase and alkaline protease, or toxic metabolites such as pyocyanin and is one of the few microorganisms able to produce cyanide, which inhibits the cytochrome oxidase of host ...

Conclusion Unlicensed alternative practices of antibiotic administration are widespread but only weak evidence exists of any patient benefit, such as reduced length of stay  in critical care, and none showing improvement in mortality. Further research is needed to determine whether extended infusion methods offer clinically meaningful advantages over shorter licenced administration methods in patients in critical care units.

The meet-cute is neatly postponed in this entertaining story of two next-door neighbours, both seeing therapists and looking for loveMuch like the process of psychotherapy itself, patience is required for results while watching this modestly entertaining slow-burn Parisian romance fromC édric Klapisch, who pulls off a neat trick by bumping the meet-cute to the end of the film. What happens before his protagonists clap eyes on each other is a kind of emotional spring clean. Both of them, a man and woman in their early 30s, are struggling with anxiety and stress; they find their way to therapy and sift through their se...

Burns, Nicole L. Anderson, Peter J. MillettAbstractSurgical exposure of the glenoid after previous coracoid process transfer is technically challenging as a result of distorted anatomy, obliterated soft-tissue planes, and adhesive scar tissue, which poses additional risk to adjacent neurovascular structures. The purpose of this article is to present a technique for glenoid exposure following coracoid transfer that involves tenoto...

The objective of this clinical study was to evaluate the efficacy of a vaginal CO2 laser treatment (CO2RE Intima) in patients with moderate, severe and very severe stress urinary incontinence (SUI) or mixed urinary incontinence (MUI), as well as its impact in sexual relations.DesignThis was a single-center, prospective, interventional study that included 25 women aged 35-68 years who presented with moderate, severe and very severe symptoms of SUI or MUI, based on Sandvik index and ICIQ-UI scores. A series of three fractional micro-ablative CO2 vaginal laser treatment sessions was performed, each spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. ...
