The Missing Biomarker or Biomarker Panel in the Recovery of Muscle Mitochondrial Function
It might be questioned why the careful, but invasive, scientific study by Gratl et al.1 should be published in this journal, because it has no immediate clinical application. The study shows that muscle mitochondrial function is depressed in the leg muscle of patients with isolated superficial femoral artery (SFA) lesions causing intermittent claudication (Fontaine stage IIb or III) disease, but that gastrocnemius mitochondrial function is normalised six weeks after successful revascularisation.
