Click to Access Audio Press ReleaseRARITAN, NJ, July 17, 2020 – The Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson &Johnson announced today six-month data from the ongoing Phase 1/2 trial (NCT03252847) of its investigational gene therapy for the treatment of inherited retinal disease X-linked retinitis pigmentosa (XLRP). The interim data showed that low and intermediate doses of the investigational adeno-associated virus retinitis pigmentosa GTPase regulator (AAV-RPGR) were generally well-tolerated and indicated significant improvement in vision. Initial data on the novel AAV-RPGR asset, jointly developed with Meira...

Many aspects of aging correlate with one another, even those with quite different underlying mechanisms and proximate causes. The various forms of root cause damage that result in the aging process, as well as their downstream consequences, all interact with one another. So whether or not any specific correlation teaches us anything about the way in which aging works under the hood is very dependent on the details. That loss of vision and hearing correlate with dementia risk is known, but the relative contribution of different mechanisms is up for debate. How much is due to similar biochemical mechanisms of damage in nervo...

In this study, we used markers to monitor the formation of SGs in Caenorhabditis elegans. We found that, in addition to acute heat stress, SG formation could also be triggered by dietary changes, such as starvation and dietary restriction (DR). We found that HSF-1 is required for the SG formation in response to acute heat shock and starvation but not DR, whereas the AMPK-eEF2K signaling is required for starvation and DR-induced SG formation but not heat shock. Moreover, our data suggest that this AMPK-eEF2K pathway-mediated SG formation is required for lifespan extension by DR, but dispensable for the longevity by reduced ...

This study retrospectively reviewed the data of 550 patients with exudative ARMD, who received intravitreal anti-VEGF (bevacizumab or ranibizumab; selected randomly) injections. Patients with hypertension on medication with antihypertensive drugs were assigned to the hypertension group (HTG;n  =  278); those with normal blood pressure and not on antihypertensive drugs were assigned to the normotensive group (NTG;n  =  272). The SABP levels were measured 30 min before anti-VEGF injection (baseline = B), during anti-VEGF injection (DI), as well as 30th (I30) and 60th (I60) ...

A 90-year-old female with a past medical history of trigeminal neuralgia and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) presented with a four-day history of a left-sided headache, nausea, and vomiting. Regarding her left eye, she reported intermittent flashes of light over the past month and complete vision loss for four days. She denied a history of diabetes, hypertension, anticoagulant use, or ocular trauma. Her ocular history included the use of reading glasses and bilateral cataract surgery forty-five years ago.

This study provides direct evidence for the contribution of gut microbiota to the cognitive decline during normal aging and suggests that restoring microbiota homeostasis in the elderly may improve cognitive function. On Nutraceutical Senolytics https://www.fightaging.org/archives/2020/05/on-nutraceutical-senolytics/ Nutraceuticals are compounds derived from foods, usually plants. In principle one can find useful therapies in the natural world, taking the approach of identifying interesting molecules and refining them to a greater potency than naturally occurs in order to produce a usefully large therape...

CONCLUSION: MPOD measured with MPSII® reflects the MP density in healthy individuals and patients with dry AMD. Aging was not significantly associated with low MPOD in healthy population, but the presence of dry AMD was significantly associated with low MPOD. Then, low MPOD may be a risk factor for development of dry AMD. Furthermore, routine screening with MPS II® for ages 50 and older is thought to help detect early low MPOD and identify individuals who should take supplements. PMID: 32030919 [PubMed - in process]
