24.1 outpatient management of acute agitation, irritability, and impulsive aggression in asd

The objective of this presentation is to provide child and adolescent psychiatrists treating youth with ASD in outpatient settings with information on ways to prevent and manage acute agitation, irritability, and impulsive aggression. Despite precautions to help transition youth with ASD safely into the outpatient clinic, they can become aggressive, agitated, and violent in the unfamiliar clinic environment. This can pose a danger to the child, family, and clinic staff. Moreover, aggression is associated with negative outcomes for children with ASD and their caregivers, including decreased quality of life, increased stress, and reduced availability of educational and social support.
