5.2 systematic review of polypharmacy studies in child and adolescent psychiatry: the asd studies

The objective of the literature review was to identify research supporting the use of 2 or more psychotropic medications in the treatment of mental health disorders in children and adolescents. A subset of the articles (n = 13) focused on adding medications to risperidone in the treatment of ASD in children and adolescents. Previous research has shown that risperidone is well-tolerated and efficacious in treating the behavioral symptoms associated with ASD in children and adolescents, but there is little evidence that it positively affects social/cognitive functioning.
