Elevated Blood Alcohol Impacts Hospital Morality Following Motorcycle Injury: A National Trauma Data Bank Analysis

Drinking and driving is one of the leading causes of accidents resulting in significant death and disability [1]. According to National Highway and Safety Administration (NHSTA), in the United State alone, there were approximately 30 deaths per day in 2017 due to drunk driving [2]. A recent report showed that approximately 31% of occupants in motor vehicle crashes had a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) at or above the legal limit (0.08 g/d) [3]. An intoxicated motorcyclist involved in a crash was nearly 28 times more likely to be killed than passenger car occupants per miles driven [4].
