Abstract Arterial stiffness, the expression of reduced arterial elasticity, is an effective predictor of cardiovascular disorders. Oxidative stress is an imbalance between exposure to toxic reactive oxygen species (ROS) and antioxidant systems. The increase in reactive nitrogen species (RNS) is termed nitrosative stress. We review the main mechanisms and products linking arterial stiffness with oxidative and nitrosative stress in several disorders, focusing on recent experimental and clinical data, and the mechanisms explaining benefits of antioxidant therapy. Oxidative and nitrosative stress play important roles ...

CONCLUSIONS: KD sera suppress the KLF4-miR-483 axis in ECs leading to increased expression of CTGF and induction of EndoMT. This detrimental process in the endothelium may contribute to coronary artery abnormalities in KD patients. Statin therapy may benefit acute KD patients, in part through the restoration of KLF4-miR-483 expression. CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION: NCT01431105. PMID: 27923814 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Authors: Tremoulet AH Abstract While the statins are best known for their cholesterol lowering capabilities, they also appear to have anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and endothelial-repairing properties that have raised the question as to whether this class of drugs can be of benefit in non-atherosclerotic, acute and chronic vasculitides. These effects, independent of the lipid-lowering effects, make the statins a class of drugs that are primed for repurposing and being used in disease states where innate and adaptive immunity and endothelial damage play a key role. Thus far, statins have been used in Behcet's, rhe...

Abstract Kawasaki disease (KD) is the most common cause of acquired heart disease in children in Japan, North America and Europe. It is now being increasingly recognized from the developing countries as well. If not diagnosed and treated in time, KD can result in coronary artery abnormalities in approximately 15–25 % cases. The long-term consequences of these abnormalities may manifest in adults as myocardial ischemia and congestive heart failure. Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) remains the drug of choice for treatment of KD, but several new agents like infliximab, cyclosporine, glucocorticoids and s...

The disease was first described by Dr. Tomisaku Kawasaki in 1967 from Japan. KD has now been reported from more than 60 countries and is the commonest cause of acquired heart disease in children in the developed countries. Japan reports the highest incidence of KD at 265/100,000 children below 5 years, followed by Korea and Taiwan. In North America and Europe, the incid...
