Pathologist's perspective on EUS guided liver biopsy

In the recent article “Efficacy and safety of EUS-guided liver biopsy,”1 the authors cite a 2001 article in the New England Journal of Medicine for criteria to determine liver biopsy adequacy. Subsequent literature and guidelines, including the 2009 American Association for the Study of Liver Disease2 position paper on liver biopsy, include different criteria for adequacy, including “an adequate number of portal tracts has been proposed as greater than 11.”2 Staging in chronic viral hepatitis is reduced in biopsy specimens less than 2.0 cm long.
